What does the School Counselor do?
As the School Counselor I am responsible for
Individual CounselingStudents are able to meet with the school counselor for any issue concerning their personal or academic progress. Students must get permission from their teacher to come to the guidance suite. The counselor may also request students to come to the guidance suite to address any parent or teacher concerns. Please note that individual sessions with students are not meant to be prolonged or ongoing. If a student has an issue that needs more specified support the counselor can offer information on community services or refer to the school based mental health provider.
Classroom Guidance LessonsClassroom guidance lessons are tailored to support identified needs within the school. Lessons can range from information on what is considered bullying to information about magnet programs offered by the district. These lessons can be offered by grade level or given across the entire student population within the classroom. The counselor takes the lead on classroom facilitation, management, and instruction.
Group CounselingGroup guidance takes place when a specific need arises or when mediation is necessary. Students receive mediation to resolve issues before they escalate. Other group sessions are organized to address a specific need. The most recent group facilitation was organized for 7th grade students who needed support with academics.

Help students transition to and from Middle SchoolSchool counselors are responsible for assisting students with registration for 6th and 9th grade. For incoming 6th graders a showcase of schools program is planned to give them pertinent information about Brogden and assistance with choosing classes. For rising 9th graders they are presented with information about all high school options, including magnet and pathway programs, and receive assistance with high school registration.
